HMLR Publications

The first step in designing new experiments and developing new understanding is knowing what science has already been done. The publications collected here date from 1895 to the present and provide a documented scientific record of change within the Hopkins Marine Life Refuge (HMLR). Over this time span, the Monterey Peninsula has gone from a few thousand to over one hundred thousand residents. Fishing that began with a few small boats and later expanded to include an intense sardine and squid fishery continues today with the fishing pressure significantly scaled back and regulated on both state and federal levels. Life is change. Monterey Bay has changed and will continue to change. Records documenting the change are essential to allow the next generations to make informed decisions.
